Creating a Sustainable Garden Project

In this project, students will learn about sustainable agriculture and how to create a garden that is both environmentally friendly and productive. The learning outcomes for this project include:

• Understanding the principles of sustainable agriculture
• Identifying the benefits of sustainable gardening
• Designing and planning a sustainable garden
• Implementing and maintaining a sustainable garden

Methodology

Students will work in groups to design and plan a sustainable garden. They will research different types of plants, soil, and irrigation systems that are best suited for their local climate and environment. They will also learn about composting and other sustainable gardening practices. Once they have a plan in place, they will work together to implement and maintain their garden throughout the semester.

Resources/Materials Required

• Access to a garden or outdoor space
• Seeds and plants
• Soil and compost
• Irrigation system
• Gardening tools
• Research materials (books, websites, etc.)

Instructions

1. Divide students into groups of 3-4.

2. Assign each group a section of the garden to design and plan.

3. Have students research different types of plants, soil, and irrigation systems that are best suited for their local climate and environment.

4. Have students create a plan for their garden, including a list of plants, a layout of the garden, and a plan for irrigation and composting.

5. Once the plans are complete, have students implement and maintain their garden throughout the semester.
