Creating a Sustainable Garden Project
In this project, students will learn about the importance of sustainability and how to create a sustainable garden. The learning outcomes for this project include:
- Understanding the concept of sustainability and its importance in our environment
- Identifying the different components of a sustainable garden
- Learning how to plan and design a sustainable garden
- Developing skills in gardening and plant care
Methodology
The project will be divided into four phases:
- Introduction to sustainability and sustainable gardening
- Planning and designing a sustainable garden
- Creating the garden
- Maintaining the garden
Resources/Materials Required
- Seeds and plants
- Gardening tools (shovels, rakes, gloves, etc.)
- Compost and soil
- Recyclable materials (plastic bottles, cans, etc.)
- Access to a garden or outdoor space
Instructions
Phase 1: Introduction to sustainability and sustainable gardening
- Introduce the concept of sustainability and its importance in our environment
- Discuss the different components of a sustainable garden (composting, water conservation, etc.)
- Show examples of sustainable gardens and discuss their features
Phase 2: Planning and designing a sustainable garden
- Divide students into groups and assign them a section of the garden to plan and design
- Provide students with graph paper and pencils to sketch out their designs
- Encourage students to incorporate sustainable features into their designs
Phase 3: Creating the garden
- Provide students with the necessary materials to create their garden sections
- Supervise students as they plant their seeds and plants
- Encourage students to use recyclable materials in their garden designs
Phase 4: Maintaining the garden
- Assign students to different tasks such as watering, weeding, and composting
- Encourage students to monitor the growth of their plants and make adjustments as needed
- Discuss the importance of ongoing maintenance in a sustainable garden
Assessment
Assessment will be based on the following:
- Completion of each phase of the project
- Quality of the garden design
- Overall sustainability of the garden
- Participation in garden maintenance tasks
