Instructions:

Introduction (10 minutes):

1. Begin the lesson by asking the students what they think a community is. Write their responses on the board.

2. Show the students a large world map and explain that a community is a group of people who live and work together in a specific area.

3. Point out different communities on the map, such as cities, towns, and neighborhoods.

Discussion (15 minutes):

1. Engage the students in a discussion about the roles and responsibilities of community members. Ask questions like:

• Who are some people in our community who help us?
• What do they do to help us?
• Why are their roles important?

2. Show picture cards of different community helpers (e.g., police officer, firefighter, doctor, teacher) and ask the students to identify them and describe their roles.

Activity: Community Helper Collage (20 minutes):

1. Divide the students into small groups.

2. Provide each group with construction paper, glue sticks, scissors, and markers.

3. Instruct the students to cut out pictures of community helpers from magazines or draw their own, and glue them onto the construction paper.

4. Encourage the students to write the names of the community helpers and their roles next to the pictures.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

1. Have each group present their community helper collages to the class.

2. Summarize the lesson by emphasizing the importance of community helpers and their roles in keeping our community safe and functioning.

Assessment:

To assess the students' understanding, observe their participation during the discussion and their ability to identify and describe community helpers during the activity. Additionally, review their completed collages to ensure they have correctly labeled the community helpers and their roles.
