- Small containers or cups
- Paintbrushes or fingers for tracing
- Wet wipes or towels for cleaning hands
Instructions:
Step 1: Sensory Bin Setup
- Prepare the sensory bins or trays by filling them with sand, rice, or salt.
- Place the alphabet flashcards or letter tiles in a separate container.
Step 2: Exploring the Alphabet
- Invite students to gather around the sensory bins.
- Explain that they will be exploring the alphabet through sensory play.
- Show them an alphabet flashcard or letter tile and ask if anyone knows the letter name or sound.
- Encourage students to take turns selecting a flashcard or tile from the container.
- Ask the student to identify the letter and its sound.
- Invite the student to find the corresponding letter in the sensory bin by tracing it with their finger or a paintbrush.
- Encourage students to explore the texture of the sand, rice, or salt as they trace the letter.
- Repeat the process with different letters, allowing each student to have a turn.
Step 3: Writing Practice
- Provide each student with a small container or cup filled with sand, rice, or salt.
- Give them a paintbrush or encourage them to use their fingers for writing.
- Ask students to choose a letter they have explored in the sensory bin.
- Invite them to practice writing the letter in the sand, rice, or salt using the paintbrush or their fingers.
- Encourage students to say the letter name or sound as they write it.
- Support students as needed, providing guidance on proper letter formation.
- Allow students to explore and practice writing multiple letters.
Assessment:
Assessment will be ongoing throughout the activity. Observe students' ability to identify and name letters, their engagement with the sensory play, and their attempts at writing letters. Take note of any areas where students may need additional support or guidance.
Remember to provide positive reinforcement and encouragement throughout the activity to foster a love for learning and writing.
