Resources/Materials Required:
- Color wheel posters
- Paints (primary colors: red, blue, yellow; secondary colors: green, orange, purple)
- Paintbrushes
- Watercolor paper
- Palette or plastic plates for mixing colors
- Aprons or old shirts to protect clothing
Instructions:
Introduction (10 minutes):
Begin the lesson by displaying color wheel posters and discussing the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow). Explain that these colors cannot be created by mixing other colors and are the building blocks for all other colors.
Activity 1 - Mixing Secondary Colors (20 minutes):
Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with paints, paintbrushes, and a palette or plastic plates for mixing colors. Instruct the students to mix the primary colors to create secondary colors (red + blue = purple, blue + yellow = green, red + yellow = orange). Encourage them to experiment and observe the changes in colors as they mix.
Activity 2 - Warm and Cool Colors (15 minutes):
Show examples of artwork that use warm and cool colors. Discuss the concept of warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and cool colors (blue, green, purple). Ask the students to identify warm and cool colors in the examples and explain how these colors make them feel.
Activity 3 - Creating Artwork (30 minutes):
Provide each student with watercolor paper and paints. Instruct them to create their own artwork using warm and cool colors. Encourage them to experiment with different color combinations and express their creativity.
Assessment:
Assess the students' understanding and application of the lesson objectives through the following:
- Observation during group activities and discussions
- Reviewing the students' artwork and discussing their color choices
- Informal questioning to check their knowledge of primary and secondary colors
By the end of the lesson, students should:
- Know: The primary colors and how they can be mixed to create secondary colors
- Understand: The concept of warm and cool colors
- Can do: Create artwork using different color combinations
